Hotjar Reviews: What Users Actually Say (2026)

Hotjar Reviews: What Users Actually Say (2026)

Hotjar is behavior-analytics software (heatmaps, session recordings, surveys). Its own site, hotjar.com, now redirects entirely to contentsquare.com, following the September 2021 acquisition; there is no standalone Hotjar product left to buy. Review platforms still cluster at 4.3-4.6/5, but Trustpilot sits at 1.6/5.

Hotjar Review Overview

  • G2: 4.3/5 on 345 reviews, checked September 2026, mix of “Incentivized/G2 invite” and “Organic” reviews, reviews dated into August 2026.
  • Capterra / GetApp / Software Advice: 4.6/5 on 545 reviews, one Gartner review pool republished three times, checked September 2026, mixed nominal-incentive and no-incentive labels.
  • TrustRadius: 7.3/10 on 191 reviews, checked September 2026, scored on the merged “Contentsquare, now with Hotjar” listing rather than a standalone Hotjar profile, with some reviews explicitly tagged “Incentivized.”
  • Trustpilot: 1.6/5 on 60 reviews, checked September 2026, the platform itself flags no recent history of review solicitation and no replies to negative reviews.

What Users Say About Hotjar

Users across the B2B platforms praise heatmaps and session recordings for making user behavior easy to act on, and repeatedly flag post-acquisition pricing changes and support quality.

G2: 4.3/5 (345 reviews, checked September 2026)

Several reviews sampled carry G2’s own “Incentivized” tag with source “G2 invite”; others are marked “Organic.”

What users praise:

  • Heatmaps and session recordings together give fast, usable UX insight
  • Easy setup and use for non-technical marketers
  • Survey and feedback widgets surfacing real bugs

Where users push back:

  • Reviewing large volumes of session recordings is time-consuming
  • Filters, segmentation and reporting flexibility limited compared to dedicated analytics tools
  • Occasional slow performance on large datasets

“The biggest drawback is that reviewing a large volume of session recordings can be time-consuming, especially when I’m trying to spot patterns across many users.”

  • Natanael G., Sr Software Engineer, Small-Business (G2 )

Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice: 4.6/5 (545 reviews, checked September 2026)

These are one review pool, not three. Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice are all Gartner Digital Markets properties, and this listing is identical across all three: same 4.6 rating, same 545-review count, and the same 367/160/15/1/2 star distribution. Treat this as a single sample republished three times, not three independent corroborations. GetApp and Capterra both disclose they may earn a referral fee on vendor links. Capterra’s underlying page data shows a mix of “NominalGift” and “NoIncentive” labeled reviews; Software Advice shows per-review “Organic” and “Incentivized… offered a nominal incentive” labels.

What users praise:

  • Heatmaps and click-maps easy to read
  • Session recordings surfaced real bugs, including a checkout-flow issue
  • Feedback tab driving real product fixes

Where users push back:

  • Pricing tiers became “extremely hard to follow” after the acquisition
  • Freemium allowance runs out quickly
  • Multi-domain and multi-site management weaker than single-site use

“After the product was acquired the price was instantly increased while the pricing tiers became extremely hard to follow which added additional friction and made me move to other tools and services.”

  • Mihail I., Senior Product Manager, Financial Services (Capterra )

TrustRadius: 7.3/10 (191 reviews, checked September 2026, merged listing)

This score sits on TrustRadius’s merged “Contentsquare, now with Hotjar” product page, not a Hotjar-only listing. It is one sample covering both products, not independent corroboration of Hotjar specifically. Some reviews in the visible stream are explicitly tagged “Incentivized.”

What users praise:

  • Click analytics, scroll maps and conversion tracking, each rated highly against category averages
  • Linking session recordings to specific A/B tests
  • Contextual, in-the-moment insight replacing assumption-based decisions

Where users push back:

  • Mobile app and dashboard interactivity rated below category average
  • The heatmap tool itself scored notably below the category average on this platform
  • No phone support line, making troubleshooting harder

“Difficult to troubleshoot Hotjar issues since there is no line to call.”

  • Unnamed reviewer, Product/Design/Engineering team (TrustRadius )

Trustpilot: 1.6/5 (60 reviews, checked September 2026)

Trustpilot’s own page flags this profile with “No recent history of asking for reviews” and notes the company “hasn’t replied to negative reviews,” meaning this small sample may skew toward people who came specifically to complain.

What users praise:

  • Not enough positive substance in the visible sample to summarize a praise theme

Where users push back:

  • Post-acquisition support quality drop, specifically AI-first support replacing human contact
  • Pricing tier upgrades described as opaque and costly
  • Billing complaints tied to per-feature limits after the pricing model changed

“They went from a tool you could use very affordably to penny-pinching every little feature.”

Where the Review Platforms Disagree

G2, the Gartner pool (Capterra/GetApp/Software Advice) and TrustRadius’s merged listing all sit between roughly 3.65 and 4.6 out of 5, while Trustpilot sits at 1.6/5 on 60 reviews, a gap of roughly 2.7 to 3.0 points on a 5-point scale, the largest divergence in this series. The B2B platforms carry samples of 191 to 545 actively solicited or verified buyer reviews. Trustpilot’s sample is smaller and, by the platform’s own disclosure, unprompted: Hotjar hasn’t invited reviews there recently and hasn’t replied to the negative ones. That does not make either figure wrong; it means the two are measuring different populations under different conditions, and neither cancels the other out.

Hotjar Pricing

Hotjar no longer has a standalone pricing page. Both hotjar.com and hotjar.com/pricing/ redirect fully to contentsquare.com, where Hotjar is sold as part of Contentsquare’s product line. Read on 2026-09-04, the displayed tiers are:

  • Free (paid monthly): $0. Heatmaps, session replay, surveys, limited integrations.
  • Growth (paid monthly): listed at $49 per month, $39 with annual billing. Gated at 7,000 monthly sessions, 13-month data access and 3 projects, with journey analysis and AI summaries.
  • Pro and Enterprise (paid monthly): sales-gated, priced on request.

The vendor’s page shows these figures as a bare $ with no currency code displayed in the page, so the currency shown here is exactly as it appears on the page, not confirmed as USD. The constraint that bites is monthly sessions, not seats.

Hotjar as a Vendor: Stability Signals

Source Score Reviews Last checked
Glassdoor (legacy Hotjar entity)4.0/5 93 September 2026
ComparablyNot verified (page blocked) September 2026

Glassdoor’s legacy Hotjar employer profile scores 4.0/5 on 93 reviews, but the page itself banners “Acquired by Contentsquare” and directs visitors to the Contentsquare profile instead. Several recent review titles in the visible sample describe the post-acquisition period, including “Old Hotjar is no more” and “Hotjar does not exist anymore,” alongside older, higher-rated reviews from before the transition. Comparably’s employer page returned “Access to this page has been denied” on repeated attempts; that is recorded as blocked, not as an absent profile. A separate Glassdoor score exists for Contentsquare, the parent company, but it was not independently loaded live in this pass and is not published here.

On the client side, the same post-acquisition period shows up as the leading complaint theme on Capterra, GetApp, Software Advice and Trustpilot: pricing tier changes and a shift toward AI-first support. Read alongside Glassdoor’s post-acquisition review titles, these are two separately sourced observations pointing at the same transition, not one causing the other.

Do You Need the Tool or the Outcome?

If you’re evaluating Hotjar, you’re really evaluating Contentsquare’s Growth tier, since that’s what “Hotjar” is today. A heatmap and session-recording licence tells you where visitors drop off; it doesn’t run the experiments, write the page copy, or fix the funnel once you’ve spotted the leak. That work sits with whoever is running growth day to day, and the licence is the cheap part next to the headcount needed to act on what it shows.
